KOLHAPURI CRAFTS
Kolhapuri chappals are open toed,flat,T stapped sandal handcrafted leather chappals which are tradinally made in kolhapur by the community of people
whose hereditary occupation is tanning and leather work since ages.
originally this was being used by farmers and works working in fields but the unique design of its has reached to a wider group of people who
has attracted people from all over the world.
Its made of buffalo's hide, goat's fine leather is used for the plated strips, and the cords used to stich are made up of leather.
These slippers are locally tanned uing vegetable dyes.
About 20,000 crafts persons in kolhaput district are employed in making these slippers.
History
These were first used in 13th century and prevoisly known as kapashi,paytaan,kachkai,bakkalnali and pukari the villages where they were made.
Because of its unique design it became famous in mumbai, calcutta and gradually all over the world.
Design:
This is made of buffalo hide and thread and weigh as much as 2 kg because of its thickness of sole which makes it more durable and preventive
from extreme heat and montainous terrains and any kind of wear and tear.
